James – Cooktown and Cape Tribulation

On Monday we went on a fishing trip on our friends boat who we met on the Gibb River Road – they live in Cooktown, Queensland.  Their boat is really big and its even got a spare motor and you could sleep on board if you wanted.  Then we left for the trip.  We launched the boat at a boat ramp that was about 20 minutes from Robert’s house (Robert is our friend).  We went up the river for 45 minutes before we were able to cast a line in.  We were fishing for 10 minutes before Sam caught a log.  Then we went upstream to a bank and had a walk through the true rainforest.  It was very hard to walk through there because there was lots of roots and dead trees on the ground and there was no path.  We found an Orange footed scrub fowls nest that was huge.  It was about 3 metres high and 5 metres wide.

When we went back to the boat we had a lovely dinner on board.  After we finished dinner we went out croc spotting.  The first crocodile that we spotted was a small one.  The next one was about 6 metres long and one metre wide.  Next we went back to the caravan.

The next we day we headed for Cape Tribulation and the Daintree rainforest but to get there we needed to go on a dirt track.  We set off on the dirt track and all was going well until we were about 10 kilometres in but then we hit the steepest part and we couldn’t make it up, even in low range.  We rolled back down the hill very slowly until we were at the bottom so Mum, Sam and I had to get out of the car and Dad had to empty one of the water tanks and then we could get up the hill with no problem at all.  So then we continued for the next 23 kilometres and then we were relieved that the Bloomfield track was over.

Then we went to the camping area and set up camp and then we had a nice walk on the beach which was lovely and we also played on the beach with the Frisbee and coconuts which was also lovely.  Then mum and Dad went back to the caravan while Sam and I played on the beach until we had to go back and do homework and then I wrote what you have just read.  It was all a very exciting week for me.  Bye from James.

  1. You are very good at transmitting your excitement in the way you write, James. And we can also sense the nervousness you felt when the climb was too steep and your relief when it was successfully completed. Well done!

  2. I think we were luckier than you Sam. We were in a mini bus and didn’t have to worry about driving it ourselves – well we couldn’t anyway as we weren’t allowed. Didn’t have a 4WD!!! Love Les and Ros xxxx
